Dahl, Roald Annotated Bibliography & Selected Collectible Books

Small details make all the difference in collecting books, and nothing can make this point better than the Alfred A Knopf (New York) first edition of Roald Dahl's classic story 'Fantastic Mr Fox'. Roald Dahl was a prolific children's author whose stories regularly graced the bestseller lists, and have since been turned into feature films, Hollywood blockbusters, picture books and animated shorts. The appeal of an author like this to the collector is undeniable.

When collecting children's books there really is a cornucopia of choice for the collector, as there are multiple reprints and specialist editions featuring some of the biggest-name illustrators of their times. The collector can focus upon any of the small details of the book to make the right choice for the collection, not just book condition, provenance, age, author, but also edition, publisher, cover illustrator, internal illustrator, color options as well as the more regular binding options.

Of course, all of these details can sometimes just as easily make the business of collecting more difficult, so it is wise to fall back on a good rule of thumb: age and condition.

In our example, Fantastic Mr Fox was published in America by Alfred A Knopf publishers of New York, as well as George Allen and Unwin of Great Britain in 1970. Both of these books also feature the iconic Mr Fox standing in front of his home-tree on the attractive dust jacket of the hard cover. An interesting difference however is that the Alfred A Knopf edition actually predates the George Allen and Unwin edition by a few months, and features a different illustrator - Donald Chaffin, who was later commissioned to work with Penguin's editions of Fantastic Mr Fox by author Roald Dahl. Small details like this, at the moment only mean the difference between twenty to fifty dollars, but in the future could well determine this remarkable book's provenance.

At the moment, the Donald Chaffin illustrated early first edition of Fantastic Mr Fox can fetch anything from $500 upwards.
