Annotated Reference Guide to Collectible Books and Original Prints

Limited Editions Club Annotated Bibliography & Selected Collectible Books

When collecting fine print books, little can be said without mentioning one of the best-cherished names in collectible history: the LEC, or Limited Editions Club.

The Limited Editions Club began as a revolutionary concept in the book trade by the avid bibliophile George Macy (1900-1956). He endeavoured to bring together some of the finest book designers, artists, and graphic designers together with the greatest works of literature, to produce very limited numbers of books for a subscription-only club. These rarefied numbers, as well as the subject matter and the artists involved, made the Limited Editions Club an immediate, certain, success.

The impact of the LEC cannot be underestimated, and it is no wonder why they are so well-respected by collectors amateur and professional alike, as the artists and authors were encouraged to hand-sign the books. The Limited Edition Club arguably did much to preserve the careers of many artists, as, during the Depression era, artists who would otherwise be struggling (such as Picasso, Matisse) found that they still had work with Macy.

In its later years, after Macy's sad demise, the LEC was passed down through the family, who focused more on collaboration with fine artists rather than graphic artists, meaning that this period of books have more artistic cache and resonance - but perhaps less uniqueness. Unfortunately, the LEC printed what appears to be their last work in 2010, making their back catalogue highly desirable for collectors.

When collecting LEC books, it is always advisable to seek bookseller images, as the LEC is one of the most sought-for collectible fine art books in the world. It is also very worthwhile investigating non-traditional book dealers, such as second hand bookstores, house clearance sales or independent bookstores. As the LEC operated its subscription services throughout the world, then there are doubtless copies of some highly esteemed and much-sought for work to be found in the most unlikely of places!

Perhaps the most impressive LEC book currently on offer would be the unique James Joyce and Henri Matisse-designed Ulysses. A more amenable choice might be the LEC's 'mid-cost' editions, such as Langston Hughes Sunrise is Coming After a While, with a foreword and afterword by Maya Angelou.
