Annotated Reference Guide to Collectible Books and Original Prints

Tolkien, J.R.R. Annotated Bibliography & Selected Collectible Books

One of the most collectible authors today, the father of the epic fantasy, Professor J.R.R. Tolkien is quite possibly one of the best places to start should you be considering a career in collecting.

What makes this humble Oxford Don, author of The Lord of the Rings saga as well as The Hobbit and The Silmarillion so collectible? Well, an immediate answer is his prestige in the field, which understandably is incalculable. Another feature is the sheer wealth of his published material. It is oft lamented amongst Tolkien collectors that their work will never be done, as the output of his fiction, literary analysis, poetry and short verse was considerable.

When collecting Tolkien, it is best to decide whether you are going to try to collect the rarest of his works, or the most appealing collectible of editions. Let me explain the difference. Some of the rarest of his works include the short pamphlets Songs for Philologists (privately published, Oxford Press) or The Devil's Coach Horses (a discussion on Anglo Saxon myth), with only a few hundred of each printed. Or, for the rarest of his editions you may consider the first edition Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, or his short analytical pieces in the Review of English Studies journal. However the price tag associated with these would be considerable, with the first edition LOTR (Lord of the Rings) and the Hobbit being in the tens of thousands of dollars.

It may be more advisable to consider searching for collectible limited editions, such as editions of LOTR published in different formats, on limited print runs or with different artists used, such as the illustrated limited editions commissioned by George Allen and Unwin.

Some of the rarest of editions of LOTR, if you are considering a serious collection would be:

  • The 3000 copies of the first edition The Fellowship of the Ring, 1954, George Allen and Unwin.
  • The 3250 copies of The Tow Towers, 1955 (first print run edition).
  • The first (unauthorized) paperback edition of The Fellowship of the Rings by ACE books, 1965.
