First Edition Prices, Values and Auction Results

We collected a sample of 20 auction results of Faulkner, William's The Sound and the Fury from 3 different auction houses. The lowest overall price realized in our sample was $120 and the highest overall price realized was $27500. The overall average price was $6548 and the median price realized for the book was $4135. There were 9 auctions (60%) with a price realized below the low estimate, 3 auctions (20%) exceeding the high estimates, and 3 auctions (20%) within the range of the low and high estimates. Auctions of interest include: a Bonhams sale on April 13, 2015 of a 1929 - Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith edition for $27500 that first issue; a Swann sale on November 21, 2013 of a 1929 - Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith edition for $10625 that described as "spine panel uncommonly bright and unfaded"; a Swann sale on June 20, 2013 of a 1929 - Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith edition for $24000 that custom drop-back case; a PBA sale on January 26, 2006 of a 1929 - Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith edition for $14400 that described as "a near fine copy in a very good or better jacket; unrestored and attractive"; a Swann sale on November 11, 2004 of a 1929 edition for $7475 that custom cloth chemise and slipcase;
