First Edition Prices, Values and Auction Results

Agustin Zamorano (1798andndash;1842) is not an everyday name but he is identified as being the first man to bring printing to California. Author Herbert Fahey brings this man's contributions to life as well as the early dawning of the printing industry in California through his book Early Printing in California. It describes the crude wood- block printing of the Mexican province to California's Gold Rush days. andnbsp;There were 400 copies of Fahey's first edition (1956) printed by the Grabhorn Press that can expect to sell for $50-$200 at auction. An earlier version was published by The San Francisco Club of Printing House Craftsmen in 1949 page and sells for about $75.

We collected a sample of 20 auction results of Fahey, Herbert's Early Printing in California: From Its Beginning in the Mexican Territory to Statehood, September 9, 1850 from 1 different auction houses. The lowest overall price realized in our sample was $48 and the highest overall price realized was $204. The overall average price was $134 and the median price realized for the book was $132. There were 17 auctions (85%) with a price realized below the low estimate, 0 auctions (0%) exceeding the high estimates, and 3 auctions (15%) within the range of the low and high estimates. Auctions of interest include: a PBA sale on May 08, 2008 of a 1956 - Book Club of California edition for $192 that described as "near fine"; a PBA sale on October 11, 2007 of a 1956 - Book Club of California edition for $204 that described as "near fine";
