Lossing, Benson J Annotated Bibliography & Selected Collectible Books

As one of the most prolific historians in American history, Benson J. Lossing wrote and published over 40 books. He was particularly focused on the history surrounding the founding and the framing of the Constitution of United States of America. A keen book collector himself, Lossing is also notable for the custom-built fireproof library that housed his volumes of rare and important books.

Lossing is particularly celebrated for having illustrated many of his histories. Among these is a 1859 edition of The Pictorial Field Book of the Revolution (Harper and Brothers: New York), which is available for a mere $400 (first editions are valued up to three times that price). Other books illustrated and written by Lossing included The Pictorial Field Book of the War of 1812, of which an 1868 first edition (Harper and Brothers: New York) is valued around $500, and The Pictorial Field Book of the Civil War (first published in 1866-1869), a three-volume set.

Lossing also wrote biographies of many of his most celebrated compatriots, including a three volume Life of Washington: A Biography Personal, Military, Political. A first edition of this work, published by New York's Virtue and Company in 1860, is available for only about $350.
