Dustjacket a little rubbed with some loss to spine gilding, lightly discoloured in places. Bookplate signed by the author and dated August 2001 loosely inserted. The first edition of Fowles? third and best-known novel, the basis for the 1981 Karel Reisz film starring Meryl Streep. A later signed bookplate has been loosely inserted.

Los Angeles, 17.xi.1969.Ó Very good lightly used copy with some slight dampstaining and fading to the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine and outer edges, with a 2Ó x 1 1/2Ó faint spot at the bottom edge of the rear board near the spine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket with a few very slight rubbed spots and couple of very tiny edge nicks. The basis of the film starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons, with a screenplay by Harold Pinter. From the library of journalist and novelist Wayne Warga. The youngest editor at Life Magazine at age 25, Warga reported on John F. KennedyÕs race for the Presidency, and went on to cover the Civil Rights movement for the magazine. For many years, Warga was one of the leading writers at the Los Angeles Times where he did in depth articles and features on writers and people in the arts. Later, Warga became a mystery novelist, creating three well-received bibliomysteries: Hardcover, Fatal Impressions, and Singapore Transfer, featuring Los Angeles rare book dealer, Jeffrey Dean.

Description: Stated First Edition with no mention of subsequent printings; A Near Fine book in a Near Fine dust jacket. SIGNED and warmly inscribed by the author on the 2nd free paper. A handsome copy of this extraordinary novel, by the author of "The Collector" and "The Magus"; scarce in the true first edition and signed by Fowles. This copy is in near fine condition with a square tight binding, bright gold design and silver lettering over pale blue boards, and crisp, white pages throughout; the book does show some mild sunning to the spine ends, some slight rubbing to the edges, and a couple of small soiled areas to the exterior text block, else fine. Housed in a bright and clean near fine dust jacket that shows some very light rubbing to the spine ends and edges, and a date stamp to the bottom of the back flap (the corner of the back flap also has a tiny tear). Overall, a highly presentable and very collectible copy of this novel, enhanced with Fowles signature. Not remaindered, not price clipped ($7.95 intact), and not ex-library; in archival protection and will ship in a sturdy box.
