(Stephens, Alice Barber); Hawthorne, Nathaniel. Writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne : The Marble Faun (Volumes 9 and 10) [Ltd Ed]. Houghton Mifflin; Boston; 1900; 8vo (8 3/4" X 5 3/4"); 294 and 359 pages, 1900.

Price: US$195.00 + shipping

Description: VG+/None. First and only autographed edition, the only 2 books in Mifflin's 22 volume autographed set limited to 500 numbered sets that Alice Barber Stephens signed or contributed illustrations, this being volumes 9 and 10 from set number 159. Publishers original smooth white woven cloth with paper label on spine with author's name, title and 'autographed edition' printed in black inside box borders printed in red. Contains a photogravure frontispiece, vignette title, and 4 additional B&W plates by Stephens in each volume (thus 2 Stephens signatures), all on India paper mounted, with each frontispiece signed in pencil by Stephens. Descriptive tissue guards for all illustrations, and a printed limitation page behind the half title of each book indicating they are both from copy #159 of only 500 sets. This family authorized set of Hawthorne's was issued by Houghton Mifflin in 1900 in 3 versions - an 'autographed' set limited to 500 copies, a 'large paper' set limited to 500 copies, and an 'Old Manse' smaller sized trade edition. The autographed edition is by far the most desireable because it was signed not only by Hawthorne's daughter Rose Hawthorne Lathrop (in Volume 1), but each of the 22 volumes has their frontispiece hand signed in pencil by the artist. In all, 21 different artist's signatures are to be found in this veritable treasure trove of golden age illustrators and artists that include Childe Hassam, Howard Pyle, Jessie Willcox Smith, Edmund Garrett, Anna Whelan Betts, Sarah Stillwell, Eric Pape, E C Peixotto, Alice Barber Stephens (the only artist with signed frontispieces in 2 volumes), and numerous others. Leatherbound sets of the autographed edition can be found on the internet priced from $3,500 to $12,500, making it financially difficult for the collector of any individual artist to secure a copy of their scarce autograph. The 2 volumes offered here are volumes #9 and #10 in the Hawthorne set - the only 2 volumes for which Stephens contributed illustrations and the only 2 volumes of the set which she signed. The frontispieces are one of the few limited edition volumes ever signed by Stephens, and is far less common to find as a single volume because they are usually part of the 22 volume set - if one is only interested in Stephen's work one therefore need not acquire any other of the remaining 20 volumes to have all of her contributions to the set. The 2 Stephens' volumes are also being offered here togather - the only other copy offered on the internet is a single signed volume, which is far less incomplete both in terms of the Hawthorne work as well as having Stephens' complete contributions to the set. While the large paper limited edition is the same size as this volume, it must be considered much the less desireable because it lacks Stephen's signature. Truly a scarce and highly collectible book, in quite collectable condition, that belongs in every serious Stephens collector's library. FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT AUTOGRAPH EDITION OF THE WORKS OF ONE OF AMERICA'S MOST CELEBRATED AUTHORS. This is a beautifully produced, illustrated and bound set of Hawthorne’s complete works. Salem’s Nathaniel Hawthorne was from a prominent puritan family dating back before the time of the famous witch trials. He led a solitary life and was of rare sensitivity, thus he resisted the Transcendental movement favored by his contemporaries and developed a style of storytelling all his own. His extremely popular works of fiction, including such classics as THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES and THE SCARLET LETTER, are often called masterpieces of New England spiritual history. His shorter works, like Poe’s but with more of a moral significance, helped to develop the short story into a distinctive American genre. Rose Hawthorne Lathrop was Rose was the daughter of Nathaniel and Sophia Hawthorne. This is a wonderful set, beautifully bound and autographed by as close a descendant of Hawthorne as is possible to find.

With good signed handwritten letterdated 25th April 1960 from Charles Street Bath where Hawthorne was staying on a tour of Europe and Britain with his family. He discusses the manuscript of "Monte Beni' (The Marble Faun part of which he had sent to Bright) and also arranges a meeting and a trip trip 'I should like to see Cambridge under your auspices.' He also refers to Bright's rating (presumably of the value) of another Hawthorne MS - the short story 'Benicia Boy'. About 260 words signed 'Sincerely Yours Nath' Hawthorne'. Henry Arthur Bright (1830-1884) was an English merchant, antiquarian, renowned book collector, poet, critic, publisher and a close friend of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) first encountered Henry Arthur Bright as an English merchant based at Knotty Ash, Liverpool, when Bright, on a tour of America, met him in Concord by means of a letter of introduction made by Longfellow. So began a close friendship which was further enabled by Hawthorne's move to England in the following year, having been appointed US consul in Liverpool by President Franklin Pierce. Bright came from a notable and wealthy Liverpool family and was a partner in his father's shipping firm of Gibbs, Bright & Co. He was a literary enthusiast who wrote reviews for the Athenaeum and other periodicals on a regular basis, including of books associated and by Hawthorne. For Bright, the friendship provided intellectual stimulus, the two were known to spar, Hawthorne's wife said, 'Bright is one of Mr Hawthorne's enthusiastic lovers and they fight in love and honor all the time.' Bright meanwhile was able to provide Hawthorne with an entry into Liverpool society and introduced him to British countryside and towns; the two went on various expeditions together including a tour of North Wales. Hawthorne presented Bright with the full manuscript of 'The Marble Faun' and said of him, he 'was the illumination of my dusky little apartment, as often as he made his appearance there!' Bright said of Hawthorne, 'It is one of the best things in my life to have made a friend of you.' Hawthorne returned for the last time to the United States in 1860 already suffering from ill health, he was to die four years later. It is siaid that Bright was the first person to recognise Hawthorne's genius. Very good indeed.
