Description: 8vo. Original cloth, lacking dust jacket. Cloth edgeworn, with corners bumped. Inscribed by Williams to his close friend, Estelle Hagel: "Estelle Hagel for old times sake, William Carlos Williams." With Hagel's bookplate fixed to front pastedown. Hagel was a registered nurse whose friendship with Williams was borne out of his lesser known profession, medicine.

Inscribed by the author: "Betty Parkinson, affectionately yours, William Carlos Wiliams. 3/26/52." The first volume in Williams' "Stecher Trilogy", about a young immigrant family in pre-WWI New York.

Signed by William Carlos Williams on the front free endpaper in black ink. 291 pp. Near Fine in Good+ unclipped dust jacket. Cloth worn along top edge. Jacket soiled and rubbed with tearing along the fore edge of both panels, chipped at extremities. A rare signed novel from the famous New Jersey poet, novelist, and doctor.

DJ in VG shape with some shelfwear present to the DJ, however it is encased in an older laminate that is impossible to remove and is starting to chip. Previous owner's bookplate residue present to the reverse of the front board. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid, boards clean with no wear present. This novel is about an immigrant family, their ties to their culture and roots, while trying to adjust to a new culture, city life, and above all capitalism. The wholesomeness of the farm, the pull of the land, is contrasted with life in the city and the unbridled capitalism of the "Owners." How does an honest diligent worker fit into this new world?
