Description: No. 233 of 250 copies, octavo size, 289 pp., signed at the Preface by Joel Chandler Harris. The stories told by Joel Chandler Harris' (1848-1908) character Uncle Remus feature the popular Brer Rabbit from African-American folklore, a trickster character who lives by his wits. This limited edition of Harris' book is copiously illustrated by Arthur Burdett Frost (1851-1928), a prolific American illustrator and cartoonist, who for many years drew for "Harper's" and "Life" magazines; here he creates eleven exquisitely rendered black-and-white plates and countless line drawings of the animal characters that populate the book. Gorgeously bound in white parchment-like paper with gilt illustrations and lettering, the book also contains a new Preface by Harris commending Frost on his illustrations, writing ". . .you have taken it under you hand. . .The book was mine, but now you have made it yours." ___DESCRIPTION: Binding of full white parchment-like paper, gilt lettering, decorations, and ruled borders on the front board and spine, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, frontispiece a black-and-white illustration by A. B. Frost, with lettered tissue guard, title page black-and-white historiated border, eleven (including frontispiece) black-and-white plates with lettered tissue guards and numerous line drawings in black by Frost throughout, the plates all printed on mounted tissue paper; octavo size (9.25" by 6.5"), pagination: [i-iii] iv-xxi [xxii-xxiv] [1-2] 3-265, one of 250 copies, this number 233, signed by Joel Chandler Harris at the end of the Preface. ___CONDITION: Volume is near fine overall, with a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; boards have light soiling, light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and corners, corners are very gently bumped, spine is very slightly cocked, the heavy paper, being somewhat stiff, caused the front and rear flyleaves to have light creases at the spine, as well as the bottom corner of the frontispiece to be creased (in the margin only), gutter prior to the frontispiece is slightly cracked, light toning to the front endpapers. Even with these few faults, a lovely copy signed by Joel Chandler Harris. ___CITATION: Houfe p. 145. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. On the inside front cover, there is a neatly written gift inscription, "The buffalo presents this account of the sayings and doings of his Bre'r Rabbit to their human friend." Christmas 1900. The initials of the recipient are unclear. On page 171, someone had written the date April 25, '35, in a shaky hand. On the back of the frontispiece, there is a small orange dot (smaller than a dime) in the top margin which is transferred to the preceding page - where a dot of glue or something similar once got squished. No other marks or signs of its 125 years of life. This copy is clean throughout. Measures 6.75 x 9.25 inches. In 1895 when this collected was released, Harris was still hard at work as both journalist and novelist. Three collections of Uncle Remus stories had already been published, and he would write and re-arrange them into several more versions before his death in 1908. This copy is every bit the equal of the others listed here, but is priced lower because we were able to acquire ours at a reasonable price, so we hope to pass the savings along to you.
