This lovely Cheloniidae Press edition, edged in vellum over handmade paper-covered boards, is illustrated with eight wood engravings by Alan James Robinson. Number 71 of 200 copies SIGNED by the artist on the colophon page, it is in virtually mint condition. Unpagenated, etched portrait frontispiece and 7 wood engravings, quarto (4to), hardcover 1/4 vellum over bds. with an extra set of the 8 prints in a linen folder, loose as issued, in 1/4 vellum clam shell box, part of deluxe edition of 10 AP copies numbered "Artist Proof 10.", all prints signed by Robinson as well as the colophon. Very good condition, clean and solid. Inventory #21740-1, this item needs special handling in shipping. From colophon: "Tortoises was designed by Alan James Robinson and Arthur Larson. The tet was set by Winifred Bixler. Michael Bixler cast the Centaur and Lrrighi monotype. Additional hand composition was done by Arthur Larson at the Hampshire Typothetae, Three hundred copies were printed at the Typothetae by H. Patrick McGrath in the spring of 1983: two hundred on an obsolete, hotpressed Wookey Hole paper - T. Edmonds Creme laid; one hundred on Fabiano Perusia. All the books were hand-bound at the bindery of Gary Parrot. Ten copies were bound in full vellum, with the rest of the edition bound quarter-vellum. The introduction was written by Jefferson Hunter, Associate Proffessor of English at Smith College. the wood engravings were cut by Alan James Robinson at the Cheloniidae Press, Williamsburg, Massachusetts. . ."
