A very scarce work, in the original French.A signed presentation copy of the 1980 two volume printing of the doctoral thesis of French biographer Gabriel Merle, presented to the University of Paris on March 26th, 1977.Merle's thesis was a biography and review of biographer and critic Lytton Strachey, member of the Bloomsbury group known for establishing a new form of biography in which psychological insight and sympathy were combined with irreverence and wit. His 1921 biography of Queen Victoria won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize.With an inscription from Merle, dated 1981, to the title page of volume I: 'Pour Mrs Frances Partridge, qui participe à' l'écriture de plus d'une page de ce.
