Description: Moser's Alice joins the ranks of the earlier spectacular Alices: Tenniel, Rackham, Dali: not only do the 75 images dance and sprawl across the pages, but they reflect new visions of the text. These images range from marginalia to images merged into the text, to full page and on to two page spreads. The text is printed in black, with highlighted words in red or blue. Moser's signature is in purple, as is the limitation number, 157 of 350. The book is half bound in purple morocco with boards covered in a coordinating hand marbled paper, from the workshop of Gray Parrot. The type was cast and composed by Michael and Winifred Bixler. Further hand composition was done by Arthur Larson. Text and blocks were printed by Harold McGrath on Puligeum, a paper specially made for Pennyroyal by the Strathmore Paper Company. The clamshell case is quarter bound in morocco with cloth covered sides. The extra set of 75 prints, each signed by Moser, is enclosed in a matching cloth covered portfolio. A cover letter to the Reader from Moser explains the status of the prints in the portfolio. The prints produced for the copies of the book are fine, but some of the blocks cracked when they were put through the press for a second run. At this point, Moser decided to continue to print the second set as is--there was no time to re-do the blocks. The book and portfolio are fine, the box fine, with some discoloring and rubbing to the spine of the box (see the photographs). Description: The Pennyroyal Press edition of Through the Looking Glass. Oversized hardcover, hand-printed and hand-bound in clamshell box with separate chemise of complete suite of signed prints. Clamshell box measures just under 12 x 18 inches, by 3.25 inches thick. Natural gray buckram boards and edges, with maroon leather spine stamped in gold. The book itself is bound in full, maroon, leather, with gold lettering on the spine; gold borders and crown on the covers. This copy has the Full Leather binding, which was limited on only a few of the copies - most have paper over boards. Gray endpapers. xxv + 163 pages. This is copy number 21 of 350. This is one of the 50 special patron copies. It is numbered and signed by Barry Moser on the colophon, and is inscribed there by Moser to original owner (in green ink) with an original pencil drawing beneath. Suite of plates accompanies the book, housed in a buckram-bound chemise. There are 92 plates, each signed by Moser. In addition, there are two original pencil drawings, also signed. Everything is in very good condition. Through the Looking Glass is the second Pennyroyal Press book, following fast on the heels of his celebrated Alice in Wonderland. A matching set, both volumes in this pairing are number 270. Printed in five colors on a paper specially made for the Press by Strathmore Mills, with calligraphy by G.G. Laurens. The type is Bembo, in blue, black, and red. Bound by Gray Parrot in quarter purple morocco and crimson morocco, respectively, over marbled paper-covered boards. Each is housed with the chemise of prints in its own morocco-backed linen clamshell box, which are a little discolored along the extremities (as usual). Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, were the first two in a series of four folio editions of classic texts printed at the Pennyroyal Press. Both sold out almost immediately and have remained the most popular of Moser's oeuvre ever since. The text was edited by Selwyn Goodacre, with a preface and notes by one of America's leading Victorianists, James Kincaid. A whimsical production and among the greatest achievements of late 20th century American book design.
