INSCRIBED and SIGNED, but not in Dos Passos's hand, on the front endpaper: "To M.C. Baldwin/with the compliments/of the author/and his friend/David Margolis/July 27, 1922." Old dampspotting to front and rear covers of book; dustwrapper in very nice shape with a little wear to the head of the spine which has an internal tape repair. Description: Hardcover. No DJ. Black cloth with orange titles on the cover and spine. Some wear to binding (bumped corner, small strip/chip missing from crown of spine - the word 'Three' missing at the crown of spine). Text block clean and square. 433 pages. Some fading from age to the pages, which is normal for this book. No date on the title page. Copyright page dated only 1921. First printing typo on pages 213 ('signing') has been corrected ('singing') indicating that this is likely a 2nd printing of the first edition. Signed and inscribed on the front endpaper, "To Henrietta Malkiel, John Dos Passos." No date on the inscription. Henrietta Malkiel worked for the Office of War Information in the anti-propaganda division during WWII. She married Hollywood producer Nelson Poynter, chief of the motion picture bureau of the Office of War Information. Also included, tucked inside the book, is an original photograph of a Very young Dos Passos. approx. 3" x 5"., shows the author with round glasses, sloped shoulders, and jacket & tie. Description: A Good copy, lacking DJ, of the first edition with all the attributes of a first state copy ('signing' on p213, 3 blanks between fep & half title, no colophon on copyright page and p 9/10 tipped in rather than sewn in). The book is square and tight, dusty top edge and tanned pages. The pageshave occasional blemishes (some foxing, a marginal stain on p14/15 impacting adjacent pages also, marginal tide mark to early pages) The signature is on a tipped in page attached to the first of the 3 blanks in the front.

Later issue with line 31 on page 213 corrected to singing and no colophon to title page and appearing 1921 to copyright page. Four blank leaves to both front and rear of book. Dust jacket retains price of $2.00, but bottom most blurb to front panel printed from Stars and Stripes. Three Soldiers served as a powerful post war statement from a gifted author whose social consciousness was profound. A very good copy of the book with some rubbing to the orange-red top stain. Dust jacket near fine with just a trace of extremity wear.

Original black and red cloth near fine and birght in a good complete unclipped dust jacket with the usual blurbs on flaps and on verso. This is Dos Passos' famous first major novel, a milestone in American literature, it cover the early portions of the 20th century and pre figures his USA Triology. IN addition, this is signed presentation copy to Eugene H. Du Truson, a close friend, signed cordial regards, John Dos Passos on the front fly leaf in bold ink and well rendered easy to discern, there is only one copy like this on the market in the world and its lists for much more. A literary treasure.
