Description: BAL (1683) first state with "veielo" on page 213, line 5, binding A. Laid in is a small card SIGNED by William Cullen Bryant and dated October 21st, 1872. The volume is bumped at the corners with the boards exposed, spine ends are worn chipped and fraying, and there is a 3/4" tear to the cloth on the top front joint. A large bookplate dresses up the front pastedown and the bottom corner of the front endpaper is double creased. Text is clean with tight binding.

Description: First Edition, first state. Original cloth; bookplate, extremities a little rubbed; very good to fine. BAL 1863; first state; binding B (noted on presentation copies). Presentation copy, inscribed by the author, 'Mrs. D.D. Field, with the kind regards of William Cullen Bryant, January, 1864'. The recipient was presumably the spouse of the prominent attorney, and therefore the sister-in-law of Cyrus Field, who was responsible for the first Atlantic cable. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.

Some expected shelfwear with minor chips to the spine ends, some modest shelf soil, small fade line along the top half inch of the front cover, good hinges, sound text block, clean pages with a bit of unobtrusive margin smudges to page 216/17, no other names or markings. Some cigarette odor which should dissipate over time. Includes a page from an old undated Dauber & Pine Bookshop catalog catalog 312, ca. 1943?) that includes this book. Signed by the Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
