Description: 8vo. Signed binding of contemporary half maroon morocco by R. H. Porter. Spine in six compartments, gilt titles and vignettes, raised bands tooled in gilt. Pebble-grain maroon cloth sides, all edges gilt. Bound with Plate IV, 'The Gnoo', as frontispiece. The non-hunting Plate I, 'Chief Moselekatse', appears supplied from another copy and is bound facing page 1. 24 hand colored plates, plus both the engraved, hand colored title as well as a typeset title, and with the folding map present in the rear. Plate X noted with some foxing else the plates are fine, bright and fresh. The map is also fine. The binding is fine as well, with only traces of rubbing at the edges, hinges and corners. And this edition contains the two extra chapters. Experts consider this the first big game hunting book and an essential title for any African sporting collection. Originally issued 5 years earlier with fewer monochrome plates, the third (1841) and fourth (1844) editions contain the 24 plates in vivid hand coloring.
