A presentation copy, inscribed by the author to Karl Pfeiffer, for whom Maugham inscribed several books, some quite personally. Maugham and Pfeiffer met in 1923 and saw each other frequently from the late 1930s until the early 1950s, when the relationship began to decline. Their association effectively ended in 1959 when Pfeiffer published a biography of Maugham (Somerset Maugham: A Candid Portrait) in which he insulted Maugham's writing. Near fine copy of a collection which contains Maugham's most famous short story 'Rain'. Cloth with very slight wear at head of spine and endpapers darkened and cracked. Toole Stott A26a.
