Pullman, Philip. The Subtle Knife *******SIGNED & LINED UK HB 1/1******. Scholastic Press, London, 1997.

Price: US$710.38 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Philip Pullman – The subtle knife – First U.K. hardback printing – Scholastic Press 1997. Near fine jacket priced £12.99- light wear top of spine. Near fine book boards – light wear top and bottom of spine. Contents fine- no previous owner names or inscriptions – has the full number line including the number 2. The book has been signed and lined uniquely by the author on the title page thus ; " Avoid soul – eating spectres !" If you have read the book you will understand the relevance of this line. As the signing event was still at the time before this series became acclaimed as the phenomenon it grew into , the author was still amicable to acceding to my request of the line – the author is now averse to adding anything at his signings beyond the date of the event. As far as I am aware , no other copy has this line. This book was damaged in production – the page block had come away from the spine and cracked , resulting in some of the pages having a few millimetres tear in the centre where the separation had occurred. I sent this to a book repairer to see what could be done – he had to re-case the page block and replace the front and end board papers . There is invisible tape binding between pages 17-21 in the core of the pages – I had to look hard to see it was there ! The outcome has resulted in a handsome edition of this rare book , even with the mentioned issues. With the lavish TV series of Northern Lights due soon , there is bound to be an added increase in the authors work.p

Condition: As New

Description: This is a genuine UK first edition/first printing, with the full numberline on the copyright page ie 2 4 6 8 10 9 7 5 3 1 (some copies have a number 1 in the line but are missing the 2, and there is debate about whether they are 'true' first printings). This is the real thing. Flat-signed by the author, in blue ink, to the title page, and unmarred by a date or dedication. Both book and jacket are in astonishing condition, and look exactly as they did on the day of publication. The pages are dazzlingly white. The gilt lettering and green boards are immaculate. The £12.99 price is intact, and the interior is extremely tight and completely unmarked. This book has literally never been opened (except to check its numberline and condition), let alone read. There cannot be a more perfect copy. More photos available on request.
