Nixon, Richard [Richard M. Nixon], 1913-1994. Robert L. Livingston, Jr. (past owner).. THE REAL WAR.. New York: Warner Books, May 1980., 1980.

Price: US$250.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing (with requisite statement for latter upon copyright page) WITH BOOKPLATE INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR TO LOUISIANA U.S. REPRESENTATIVE BOB LIVINGSTON. [10], 341 pages. Hardcover: H 23.5cm x L 15.75cm. No dust jacket (i.e. lacking). Red cloth rubbed; sunning to spine with some flaking to silver stamping but otherwise still reasonably bright. a few spots of soiling to fore-edge and bottom edge with latter also have group of leaves lightly scuffed and shallowly dinged at their bottom margins. "The Real War" bookplate affixed to half-title with three-line ink inscription "Richard Nixon | for | Robert Livingston." Interior leaves are otherwise clean. Binding retains some crispness. Laid-in at rear endpapers is a folded sheet of United States Representative Robert L. Livingston's congressional office stationery evidencing the book's provenance (book was acquired from his October 2019 house sale in Alexandria, Virginia). Republican Bob Livingston served as U.S. Representative from Louisiana's 1st District from 1977 to 1999 and chaired the House Appropriations Committee from 1995 to 1999 as well as being House Speaker-designate before his resignation from office, a circumstance that the book's author was familiar with too. Presidential-signed bookplates deserve more scrutiny for the possibility of being an autopen example but this personalization to a member of Congress lends credence to an actual handwritten Nixon signature. NIXON, Richard. THE REAL WAR Inscribed to Barry Goldwater. Warner Books (1980), New York, 1980.

Price: US$9375.00 + shipping

Description: INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Nixon, as usual for this book, on a tipped-in publisher's bookplate. This copy, however, is INSCRIBED to Barry Goldwater. Barry Goldwater, a five-term United States Senator from Arizona (1953-1965, 1969-1987) and the Republican Party's nominee for President in the 1964 election, is the politician most often credited for sparking the resurgence of the American conservative political movement in the 1960s. His landslide defeat to Lyndon Johnson, which also brought down many other Republican candidates, opened the door for Johnson and a Congress dominated by Democrats to pass the Great Society programs. Goldwater returned to the Senate in 1969, but his role as a leader of the conservative movement had been transferred to Ronald Reagan. In 1974 Goldwater successfully urged President Richard Nixon (whom he called "the most dishonest individual I have ever met in my life") to resign at the height of the Watergate scandal. Goldwater retired in 1987 and was succeeded in office by John McCain. Near Fine in a Very Good dustwrapper with a closed tear and crease at the rear
