Francis Parkman Jr. (1823-1893) was an American historian, best known as the author of "The Oregon Trail: Sketches of Prairie and Rocky-Mountain Life" and his monumental seven-volume "France and England in North America." These works are still valued as historical sources and as literature. He was also a leading horticulturist, briefly a professor of horticulture at Harvard University and author of several books on the topic. Barrett Wendell (1855-1921) was an American academic known for a series of textbooks including "English Compositions," studies of Cotton Mather and William Shakespeare, "A Literary History of America," "The France of Today," and "The Traditions of European Literature." Among Wendell's younger brothers were Gordon Wendell, philanthropist and athlete Evert Jansen Wendell, and actor Jacob Wendell. Wendell graduated from Harvard in the class of 1877 with Abbott Lawrence Lowell, who was a later president of Harvard. In 1880, he was appointed Instructor in English at Harvard & he later became an Assistant Professor of English from 1888 to 1898, and a Professor of English from 1898 to 1917, after which he was professor emeritus.
