Mailer, Norman. The Naked and the Dead (SIGNED). Rinehart & Company, Inc., New York * Toronto, 1948.

Price: US$52.50 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: This jacketless copy of "The Naked and the Dead" is 8-1/4 inches tall in brown textured boards with a "flame" device stamped in black to lower corner of front board. Small, half-inch tear to cloth at top of spine. Dated 1948 with no later dates, states "Printed . . . by the Haddon Craftsmen, Inc., Scranton, PA.", but NO statement of edition. Also NO book-club deboss, and no book-club alphanumeric code to gutter of last page of text, so we don't know what edition or printing this thing is, other than the fact it has to be pre-1960. What we do know is that it's signed "Norman Mailer" (name only) to title page, and this is a "live" signature -- the pressure marks of the pen can be seen and felt to verso and even to following page. Mailer's first novel -- of the war in the Pacific -- won him lasting fame, and was considered "hard-bitten" at the time, though modern readers may be a bit surprised to discover that in 1948 the famed tough guy (1923-2007) apparently didn't know how to spell the common (if somewhat coarse) Anglo-Saxon word for reproductive behavior (even in dialog), preferring "fug" for all uses. 721 pp. Reduced from $117.

"I came out of the Army with an idea for a novel about a long patrol, an idea which had been bound in its origins to a mountain which was to serve as both an actual mass of stone and as a symbolic base for the book. The original conception was allegorical. The mountain was a consciously ambiguous symbol, something too complex, too tangible, to be defined by language." - Norman Mailer.

Speaking of his hatred for photography, Mailer wrote "It is Sally Soames's gift to take that arid and mutually exploitative encounter, and turn it into the rarest of media transactions an agreeable 10 minutes between two strangers who thereby are left with a simple reminder that fellowship is also a communion natural to us".
