First Edition--states "First Published in March 1942". Second Issue.most likely, but has the ad for the soldiers on the rear panel. Very Fine blue cloth with silver lettering spine title. Near Fine Dust Jacket with minor chipping and wear at top and bottom of spine edges and corners. Price clipped. Special copy, owned by the Protected in archival plastic. Steinbeck wrote this propaganda novella at the request of the OSS (WW II predecessor to the CIA) , to motivate the resistance movement in France and the other Nazi occupied countries. It was owned by 110th Observation Squadron of the USA with their seal and received by them on April 2nd 1942, from a very special donor. this book was published in every European language in 92 different editions, and the US government awarded the author a thank you medal.The 110 BS is the oldest unit in the Missouri Air National Guard, with over 90 years of service to the state and nation. It is a descendant organization of the World War I 110th Aero Squadron, established on 14 August 1917. It was reformed on 23 June 1923, as the 110th Observation Squadron, and is one of the 29 original National Guard Observation Squadrons of the United States Army National Guard formed before World War II.

This original dustjacket has wear to the spine and panels. The dustjacket has the $2.00 price present and all the first issue points. The book is in excellent shape. The binding is tight and the boards are crisp with slight wear to the edges and corners. The pages are clean with no writing, marks or bookplates in the book. This copy appears to be a REVIEW COPY as there are two holes punched on the first five pages to attach review material. Overall, an attractive copy of this true first edition SIGNED by the author. Includes provenance that this copy comes from the Steinbeck family library.
