Inscribed in inlk of the front free endpaper: "For Katherine _____/ From/ Katherine Anne Porter/ With best wishes/ 14 December, 1944". Very good, bit of occasional light solining to the cloth. No jacket. Porter (d. 1980) was a Texas native, winner of the 1965 Puliter Prize for Literature for her "Collected Short Stories"

Description: A fairly ordinary copy with the spine slightly yellowed and the corners are slightly bumped. Jacket has a dime sized chip to the spine head and other minor edge wear. What makes this copy unusual is that it has a gift inscription from Larry Mcmurtry. Inscribed on the front endpaper to an unnamed friend This is a birthday present I didn't find in time. With the appropriate endearments. Larry. Probably a fairly early inscription but as it is undated that would be speculation. This came from an important New York auction and is guaranteed to be authentic.

Son of Paul, grand-son of Harry, great-grandson of The Source, The Nephew of Miranda and Maria; and I made Charles Upton [the principal character in the title story] a painter on your account. You see how I had you in my mind and my heart! Aunt Katherine Anne, September 15, 1944." On the copyright page Porter has added "Published September 14, 1944."
