Description: 12mo, 358pp., scarlet cloth, extra gilt covers, shelfworn, some bubbling to the cloth, foxed, embossment of the W. H. Smith London shop on front free endpaper, just above the inked name of the original purchaser, and dated "March 1902" -within a week of publication! Note: a tight copy, but lacking 3 of the 16 Paget plates ( at pp. 208, 318, 328). A mystery classic, with the iconic Arthur Garth Jones-designed cover. [G&G A26a. DeWaal no. C369, Shaw's Basic Holmesian Library, ]. Laid in is an Autograph Note initialled by Conan Doyle on his Bignell Wood postcard-sized note card: 3 lines, 21 words, "A very interesting case." Bignell Wood was the weekend retreat home Conan Doyle gave to his wife, Jean, as a birthday present, and they are buried nearby; thus, this undated note is circa 1924-1930. Note: this has one of the two recently-discovered points: a) p. 13 has the first state of "you" for "your" ( in 'I have heard you name mentioned . "), b) has the reversed illustration at p.76, showing Sidney Paget's signature as a mirror image, as it appeared in the Strand magazine issue of October, 1901.
