FIELDING, Henry.. The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling. With illustrations by Rowland Wheelwright.. London: George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd, 1925, 1925.

Price: US$482.39 + shipping

Description: Signed limited edition, number 767 of 1,000 copies signed by the illustrator and issued in England, with a further 1,000 copies issued in the US. A beautifully illustrated edition of Fielding's masterpiece, which, along with Joseph Andrews, "established the tradition of the comic novel in English" (ODNB). An experimental writer who thoroughly ruffled the feathers of his contemporary literary establishment, Fielding is now "generally agreed to be an innovating master of the highest originality. He himself believed he was 'the founder of a new province of writing'. In breaking away from the epistolary method of his contemporary Richardson, and others, he devised what he described as 'comic epics in prose', which may be characterized as the first modern novels in English, leading straight to the works of Dickens and Thackeray" (Drabble, p. 360). Margaret Drabble, ed., The Oxford Companion To English Literature, 6th edn, 2000. Large octavo (233 x 157 mm). Twentieth-century blue morocco, spine with raised bands lettered and decorated in gilt, covers bordered with a single gilt fillet, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed with several uncut gatherings. With 16 colour plates by Wheelwright including frontispiece. With original cloth cover panel and spine pasted to two rear binder's blanks. A couple of marks to leather, light browning to half-title and final leaf, otherwise internally bright and clean. An attractive, generously-margined copy.
