Description: One of 30 copies bound in full Morocco and signed by Somerset De Chair. A very good+ copy. Wear to extremities with tanning to spine & some offsetting to boards. Internally deckle edge handmade paper leaves - all in very good+ condition with no inscriptions. Map endpapers original and unsplit. A personal account of a tiny force sent to Baghdad from Palestine to deal with the effects of the Golden Square coup and to help the Habbaniya. The operation was a success with Baghdad falling on 30th May 1941 and saved Iraq from falling into the hands of the Nazis.

Also contains poems written during the advance. Laid in is the publisher's Announcement, a single sheet giving details of the sequel to this book, The Silver Crescent.One of 500 copies, this one being signed by the author, as well as Tessa de Chair (who worked as a model under the name Sylvia Shelly), Lord Bristol, Paul Getty, Francesca Ruspoli and Anna Zinkeisen. Under all the signatures on the limitation page the author has written, ''luncheon at Carlton Club 7 December 1967''. Quite a gathering.Spine a little rubbed and, as usual, faded. Covers a bit dusty and bowed. Very good.

Spine sunned, board edges chipped and worn to the board in places, but overall very good. Photogravure portrait frontispiece and numerous similar illustrations to the text, the majority full-page, maps to the endpapers. First edition, signed edition limited of 300 copies of which just 30 were in the full binding as here, copy 9 of 30. Silver Crescent is signed at the rear of the volume. Somerset de Chair was Intelligence Officer with "Kingcol", a Flying Column of less than 1,500 men under the Command of Brigadier General Kingstone. This tiny force was sent from Palestine to Baghdad to deal with the effects of the "Golden Square" coup amongst pro-Nazi Iraqi Military Officers. Despite the air support extended to the Iraqis by the German and Italian air forces, the operation was a complete success, Baghdad falling on 30th May 1941, the books cover this and subsequent operations in Syria. Reviewed in the Spectator on the issue of the composite trade edition in 1944 as "a fascinating and well-told story in the tradition of T. E. Lawrence, and one worthy to take its place in the history of British soldiers' heroic campaigns in the Near East".
