Description: First volume in the incredible His Dark Materials series. First Edition stated with full number line down to and including 1. Inscribed by the author 'To Travis' on title page. A well loved copy in blue boards and spine cloth with gilt to type. Top corners bumped and bottom corners rubbed through paper in tiny spots. Moisture staining to spine ends and small spot rubbed through to bottom front board near spine. Some spotting, smudges and marks to page ends, endpapers(with small moisture stains at tops of hinges) and a few throughout text block. Several pages creased. Jacket is unclipped with fraying to spine ends and adjacent areas of panels(short tears and small spots of loss through rubbing), rubbing to corners and moisture stain to top inside of jacket and adjacent portions of panels. Some scuffing, scratches and marks. 1st Printing

Whilst Pullman has won the Carnegie Medal, the Guardian Children's Fiction Award, the Smarties Prize and Children's Book of the Year at the British Book Awards it was only the final instalment of the trilogy (which went onto win the prestigious Whitbred Prize, being the first Children's book ever to do so) that seems to have garnered Pullman the popular acclaim he undoubtedly deserves.
