Description: First edition illustrated by Jones, signed limited issue, number 93 of 100 copies, signed and numbered by the illustrator, and printed on "O.W." paper. Alfred Garth Jones was a popular illustrator known in France and the US as much as in the UK whose work was used in several notable publications, including works by H. G. Wells, John Milton and Arthur Conan Doyle. Completed in 1849, In Memoriam is a requiem for the poet's beloved friend Arthur Henry Hallam who died suddenly, at the age of 22, of a cerebral haemorrhage in Vienna in 1833. "The friendship, deepening into love, of Hallam and Tennyson was to be one of the most important experiences of Hallam's short life and of Tennyson's long one" (ODNB). Octavo. Original japon-backed buff paper boards, spine lettered in gilt, cream pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, yellow silk bookmark. Frontispiece with laid in tissue-guard, decorative frame to title page, 14 plates, illustrations to text, all by Alfred Garth Jones. Spine toned and rolled, light offsetting from illustrations; an excellent copy.
