Fuentes, Carlos. MYSELF WITH OTHERS: SELECTED ESSAYS - Scarce Fine Copy of The First Hardcover Edition/First Printing: With Loose Dedication Page Signed by Carlos Fuentes. New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1988, 1988.

Price: US$33.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: 1st Printing. Signed. 214 pages. Published in 1988. The author's debut collection of essays originally written in English. One of Carlos Fuentes' finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Carlos Fuentes' "Myself With Others: Selected Essays". Insightful, absorbing, and simply enjoyable essays originally written in English, the first - and only one - for a writer - and any other Latin-American writer - whose entire body of work is otherwise in Spanish. As such, it is the work of a Latin-American Master who is a true cosmopolitan. Dedicated to fellow writer Philip Roth (and his then-wife, the actress Claire Bloom), the essays recount the story of one writer's development, and evaluates the work of other writers and artists who have had an indelible influence on him. They include such masterpieces as "How I Started To Write", "How I Wrote One of My Books" (which reads like a detective story), "Borges In Action", "Gabriel Garcia Marquez And The Invention of America", "Luis Bunuel And The Cinema of Freedom", and his celebrated Harvard Commencement Address (Fuentes wrote many of the essays while he was a Visiting Professor at Harvard University). With this collection, Carlos Fuentes proves, if proof were needed, that he is equally adept in the English language, as his idol Jorge Luis Borges was (who did not actually write a full book in English), and as very few other of his great Latin-American compatriot/writers were. Widely regarded as Mexico's man-of-letters, Fuentes was more erudite than most other Latin-American writers, with the notable exceptions of Octavio Paz and Mario Vargas Llosa. Readers - including Roberto Bolano, himself a Master of the Spanish language, but despaired ever learning English -, who have read him in the original, claim that his mastery of the Spanish language was next to none among Latin-American writers in its lucidity, elegance, and purity. He is highly regarded not just for his exquisite mastery of a very complex language, but also for his restless imagination and genuine wisdom. Carlos Fuentes died on May 15, 2012 at the age of 83. To his credit, President Felipe Calderon was one of the very first to announce and mourn his death, a gesture that would be completely unheard-of from any "patriotic" political leader in the United States, Democrat or Republican, especially when one considers that Fuentes was an unapologetic near-misanthrope and a vehement, ferocious, and despairing critic of his native Mexico. This fact is well-documented and includes, among other offensive behavior towards his fellow Mexicans, scolding and lashing out in public appearances at his adoring readers there. Still, Calderon was right to say that Fuentes' death was a loss to Mexico and to world literature. An absolute "must-have" title for Carlos Fuentes collectors. This title is a great collection. Laid-in is an extra, loose Dedication Page that is very boldly and beautifully signed, dated, and inscribed in black ink-pen by the author: "And to Mary Margaret Read, in friendship, Carlos Fuentes 1989". The recipient was a fellow writer, one of the few human species that the misanthropic Fuentes respected, as his book will show. This is the only copy (with Signed Dedication Page) of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in fine condition overall: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have very serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. Winner of the Cervantes Prize in 1987, awarded to the greatest living writers in Spanish by the Spanish Government. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. Condition: As New

Description: 1st Printing. Signed. 185 pages. Published in 1988. The author's debut memoir. Now considered a late-modern classic. Limited Slipcased Edition of 250 numbered and signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the regular trade edition. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by FSG: Regular-sized volume format. Orange cloth boards with gilt titles embossed on spine, as issued. Text by Philip Roth. Matching cream cloth slipcase. Printed on archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its Limited Edition format, Philip Roth's "The Facts: A Novelist's Autobiography". His first memoir, about himself, followed and completed by "Patrimony: A True Story" (1991), about his father. In a lifetime of prodigious writing, there have been no more than ten Philip Roth Limited Editions in all, making each one of them eminently collectible. Surely, Roth deserved more, and were it not for his fraught relationship with FSG, he would have gotten more. Instead, he had to settle for Franklin Mint editions, which are strictly speaking, NOT Limited Editions because the limitation is never stated. "Reflections that stand on their own as perspicacious insights by a Master of fiction on one writer's beginnings, quest for freedom, and creative muses. Uninhibited, introspective, self-confrontational" (Publishers Weekly). "For the last half-century, the novels of Philip Roth have re-energized American fiction and re-defined its possibilities. Roth's comic genius, his imaginative daring, his courage in exploring uncomfortable truths, and his assaults on political, cultural, and sexual orthodoxies have made him one of the essential writers of our time" (Ross Miller). Philip Roth died on May 22, 2018 of congestive heart failure, literally of heartbreak, at the age of 85. An absolute "must-have" title for Philip Roth collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Slipcased Edition of 250 numbered and signed copies, indicated/numbered as such on the Front Limitation Page. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Philip Roth. This title is a late-modern classic. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed copy thus. Six of Philip Roth's novels were selected as among the Top 20 works of American fiction of the last 25 years: "American Pastoral", "The Counterlife", "Operation Shylock", "Sabbath's Theater", "The Human Stain", and "The Plot Against America". One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER PHILIP ROTH TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0374152128.
