Description: Edition limited to 1200 copies, this one of 1145 without the signed proof by Rockwell Kent, 4to, pp. xxiv, [3], 99; decorative designs by Cleland throughout, including one large folding sample tipped in, many printed in color; extremities lightly rubbed, else a very good, sound copy in orig. black buckram lettered in gilt, t.e.g., retaining a stained, chipped, split and torn dust jacket. Cleland was a major figure in graphic arts in the early part of this century. His work covered a broad spectrum in design, from automobile advertisements to book design.

Description: frontis, illustrations (incl;uding some in full or partial color), one fold out), xxiii, 99p. Original black cloth. dj. 31 cm. Jacket has some soiling and edge-wear as wll and a couple of lengthy tears. Copy # 433 of 1200 numbered copies. Laid in is a larger format print or proof (on softer paper) of Rockwell Kent's portrait lithograph which has been INSCRIBED along the bottom by Cleland ("To "Pat" with grateful regard T. M. Cleland") and by Kent ("To Stephen H. Patterson Rockwell Kent."). The laid in print is slightly larger than the book and may have been kept separate from the book. It is now covered with crosshatched and checkerboard-patterned browning which is heaviest in the margins around the print. Cleland was a book designer, illustrator, commercial artist, etc. He was hired by Henry Luce in the year this book was published to design Fortune (the magazine). Patterson, the inscribee, came from a well-to-do family and was a graduate student in linguistics at Princeton where he was also the student head or just heavily involved in the Princeton Print Club. He later worked for a while in intelligence but was mostly an unpublished poet. The book includes a "Bibliographical and Critical Introduction" by Alfred E. Hamill, a Chicago investment banks and dedicated collector, who also served as President of Chicago's Newberry Library Board of Trustees for the last 23 years of his life.
