DOYLE, Arthur Conan.. The Works. The Crowborough Edition.. New York: Doubleday, Doran & Co., 1930, 1930.

Price: US$21225.11 + shipping

Description: First complete collected edition, number 250 of 760 numbered sets signed by the author in volume I, handsomely bound. The collection includes 20 novels, 161 short stories, and his autobiography, Memories and Adventures. The Crowborough Edition - named after the Sussex town where Doyle's home, Windlesham, was located - has double the number of volumes of the Author's Edition of 1903. Doyle had already signed sheets for it but his illness and death on 7 July 1930 prevented him seeing final publication of the work, and so it belongs to that select category, the posthumous signed limited edition. The introductions are reprinted from the Author's Edition, and the text is set from the existing editions without any corrections. Green & Gibson A61. 24 volumes, octavo. Attractively bound in recent dark blue morocco, burgundy morocco labels, spines with gilt centre tools, raised bands, sides ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Photogravure frontispiece portrait by Pirie MacDonald to Volume I. The occasional minor blemish, an excellent set.
