Description: No. 51 of the 99 signed sets from a total edition of 499. 23 volumes, hardcovers, bound in gilt-stamped imitation vellum. Some rubbing, light soiling to the boards, the heads of the spines of a few volumes with short tears; vol. one with gutter stain; modest toning and occasional blemishes overall, the text blocks generally unmarked.

Description: First edition. Octavo. Twenty-three volumes. Engraved frontispiece in each volume. Full faux-vellum bindings with gilt decoration. Top edges gilt. With: salesman's sample book of this edition showing selected title-pages, printed texts, etc. On each front pastedown, including that of the sample book, is the small oval monogram plate of the extraordinary collector Stanley J. Seeger.One of only 99 sets signed by Conrad. This edition was originally intended to be limited to 377 signed copies, but Conrad died suddenly after signing only 99. The publishers then reconfigured the set as a memorial edition and printed a new limitation page. The originally limitation page (of 377) is unnumbered, but signed; the additional limitation leaf is numbered 66 of 499.Slight stains to top edges of covers of the eighth volume. Overall a fine set in original glassine and dustwrappers. The dustwrappers show signs of damp to the spines and have small chips here and there. Those of volumes 1 and 13 have extensive closed tears repaired on the reverse. That of volume 8 has a 5 cm closed tear.
