One of 25 (375) special copies printed on Arches cream mould-made paper, bound in full vellum, gilt, marbled endpapers, with a loosely inserted proof of the frontispiece signed by the artist. Lacks slipcase, otherwise a fine copy. Signed upon the colophon by R. George Thomas, Myfanwy Thomas and Hellmuth Weissenborn.

Description: Royal 8vo, 9 7/8 x 6 1/8 in. (250 x 155mm); pp. viii +28 + colophon. Two small wood engravings by Hellmuth Weissenborn on page preceding title page and at colophon. Copy XIV of XXV, NUMBERED AND SIGNED on the colophon page by Mayfanwy Thomas, R. George Thomas and H. Weissenborn. Hand set in 14-point Caslon, printed in black and brown, on Arches cream wove paper. Smith Settle binding in full limp vellum, gilt spine titling, t.e.g.; Whittington marbled endpapers and matching slipcase. A fine copy in a fine slipcase. [Butcher 53]. First appearing circa 1911 in a little-known magazine called "Orpheus," "The Chessplayer" describes a recurring, haunting dream using vivid language and Blake-like imagery. The two other essays, 'The Listener' and 'Penderyn' were hitherto unpublished. Philip Edward Thomas (1878 - 1917) was a British poet, essayist, and novelist. In 1915, he enlisted in the British Army to fight in the First World War and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras in 1917. He is commemorated in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey.
