Description: Signed by author on title page without inscription. First edition with full number line. This story starts and ends, aptly, with a book, a very special book, a 1969 edition of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven, published by the tiny, prestigious Grayson Press, of Northbend, Washington. No bibliography mentions the 1969 edition. If it indeed exists, it could be worth a fortune to the right collector. It's the kind of book somebody might kill for. In fact, somebody has.

Description: John Dunning's Cliff Janeway mystery series--particularly popular with book collectors, as Janeway is also a collector and a dealer in rare books--continues with THE BOOKMAN'S WAKE. This first edition copy is in excellent condition; some slight bumping at the top and tail of the spine, but otherwise in excellent condition, unread and tight. The dust jacket is unclipped and so clean the blood drops are still reflective. This particular copy is inscribed by Dunning to one of the country's most prominent mystery booksellers and her author then-husband, with a reference to their bookstore.

Description: This was the writer Stephen Harrod Buhner's copy. He notes: "I was friends with John Dunning for several decades and spent many a wonderful day scouting books with him during his long, ten year dry spell. When he started writing again he hit the big time with Booked To Die, the first book in the Clifford Janeway series and suddenly everyone wanted a piece of him. According to John, Iris Nevins and Paul Sawyer sent him a stack of blank sheets and asked him to sign them as they were going to specially bind various editions of his work for their own collection. I happened across this one for sale and asked John about it, saying "I didn't know there was a specially bound limited edition of Booked to Die." He said, "There isn't." To say he was upset is putting it mildly; he had no idea that they had intended, without permission from the publisher, John's agent, or John, to create what is essentially a pirated limited edition of The Bookman's Wake. John contacted them and they sent him, gratis, the remaining copies they had not yet sold." The books were specially bound in 3/4 leather and hand marbled papers to match the dust jacket (which is also included with the book). Ten copies were numbered I-X with an additional six copies marked presentation. The "limitation" page is signed by Nevins, Sawyer, and Dunning. This is copy VI. These are very rare to encounter on the market. The book dealers who find them generally don't realize that these editions were done without permission from any of the relevant parties (this is true even of ABAA members). This copy is as new, the binding is exceptional. Top edge gilt.
