Condition: Very Good

Description: 278 pp. with index. SIGNED by Lanes, Sendak. 12 x 11. At his death in 2012, The New York Times wrote that Sendak was "widely considered the most important children’s book artist of the 20th century," a statement hard to refute after seeing this book. With 261 illustrations (94 in color), author Lanes produced a title with pop-ups, tip-ins, fold-outs, and preliminary sketches in addition to family photographs and chapters covering all aspects of Sendak's life/work. This is where the wild things are-- and then some. Autumnal orange endpapers with DD penciled in upper right-hand corner in front, spine cracks somewhat, text block a bit spotted, smudged. Clear plastic dust jacket.

Price: US$360.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: The first major retrospective and biography of the author-artist best-known for Where the Wild Things Are. With 261 illustrations including 94 full-color plates and what is billed as an "original Sendak pop-up" (but which is really a pull-the-flap illustration). Mounted to p. 81 is a tiny strip book (four leaves) called Where the Wild Horses Are. The reprints of this book only have pictures of the Little Red Riding Hood "pop-up" and the Horses book. Matching Hanrahan's Works of Maurice Sendak, 107, and likely signed at the same event as the bibliographer's copy. First edition (first printing). A near fine copy in pictorial cloth with a clear printed acetate dust jacket. This copy is signed by both Sendak and Lanes and dated October 1980. Sendak's bibliographer Joyce Hanrahan's copy was signed at a book launch party and is signed the same way. This copy includes the original publisher's mailing box (unmailed). There is minor bumping to the top outer corner of the page block. The mailing box is torn along the end that opens.
