Dickens, Charles. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. Piccadilly Fountain Press, London, 1932.

Price: US$325.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Quarto. 20 volumes. Green illustrated wraps with black lettering on cover in red cloth chemise with pull loop, housed in matching red cloth slipcase with gilt lettering on spine. "The Lombard Street Edition" of Dickens is so named in commemoration of the romantic history of Charles Dickens and Marie Beadnell (the 'Dora' of David Copperfield), who lived at No. 2 Lombard Street. The illustrations are reproduced from the rare first states of the plates by Seymour, Buss and 'Phiz'. The original page numbers have been retained as they form an integral part of the etchings, and in two cases their accidental transposition is the distinguished mark of the first issue. The two suppressed plates by Buss will be included in Part 3, and the two substituted ones by 'Phiz' will be done as extras, and issued free in the last part to subscribers to the Edition de Luxe or to complete sets of the Ordinary Edition of Pickwick. The original covers are also reproduced, including the rare issue of Nos. 1, 2, and 3, with the names of the artists (Seymour and Buss). The General Title-Pages, Introduction, Preface, Contents and List of Plates will be issued (as in the original edition) in the last part. Of the Edition de Luxe, 1,000 copies only have bee printed for England and America, the title pages of which will be numbered and signed in due course." (Address). Light wear along edges of wraps and chemise. Wraps of issue I. lightly age-toned. Slipcase also with light wear along edges, spine lightly sunned and rubbed at bottom plate.
