Description: An Inscribed copy of Charles Lindbergh's detailed account of the planning and execution of his historic solo flight across the Atlantic piloting "The Spirit of St. Louis." Inscribed by Charles Lindbergh to a previous owner on the title page. Blue cloth, 562 pages including an appendix section with photos, flight log and engineering data. A later printing. The book has a bit of tanning of the page edges and light edge wear. The dust jacket has a clipped corner on the front flap although an original price remains intact. The dust jacket Has heavy rubbing at the edges of the spine and chips at both the top and bottom of the spine.

Lindbergh won the Pulitzer Prize for this account of his successful attempt of the New York-Paris flight that had claimed the lives of six pilots before him. With illustrated endpapers and photos throughout, bound in red cloth boards with silver lettering, the book measures 5.75" x 8.5'' and runs 561pp. This copy is accompanied by the original first edition pictorial dustjacket, evidently supplied by the previous owner. Lindbergh August, 1953 Publication date is Sept. 14th." The recipient, Walter Bartky was an American educator and mathematician and friend of the Lindberghs. After receiving a Ph.D. from the university, he served on its faculty in the astronomy department. In 1943 he became associate dean of the University of Chicago’s Division of Physical Sciences. During the Manhattan Project, Bartky served as the Metallurgical Laboratory’s associate director. Bartky was a signatory of the Szilard Petition. In 1945, he accompanied Leo Szilard and Harold Urey to present a memorandum to future Secretary of State James F. Byrnes that warned of the dangers of a nuclear arms race.
