Holmes, Oliver Wendell. Soundings from the Atlantic. Ticknor & Fields, Boston, 1864.

Price: US$995.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: 468pp. + 23pp. ads (dated March 1864). 1st Edition, Later Issue. Original brown cloth, stamped in blind and gilt. Autograph letter signed by Holmes, to one "My dear Mr. Osgood" (the Boston publisher who would later publish some of his works?) mentioning his receipt of tickets to hear Mr. Edwards' lectures (however he must decline) is tipped in after the front free endpaper. He mentions that he is satisfied with the "wonderful invention and its results". This is the Charles B. Foote copy with his beautiful bookplate on the front pastedown (engraved by Edwin Davis French). Foote was a banker whose bank collapsed in 1884. In 1894 part of his library was sold at auction. The catalogue entry from that auction catalogue has been clipped and attached to the back pastedown, along with Dorothy Furman's bookplate. Furman was a respected collector of bookplates and hers is beautifully printed. The price $7.00, handwritten on the catalogue entry is scribbled out-apparently the price realized at unfortunate Foote's auction. Bookplate of Charles Clifford Dibble on the front free endpaper. I guess that makes this the Foote\Furman\Dibble\Kirk\Speed copy, in terms of provenance (you can add your own name to the list when you buy it). Chip from the backstrip. Corners bumped and rubbed through. Spine ends chipped. Some separation along the front joint. Hinges cracked. Lacking the rear free endpaper. Some waterstain along the top edge of the text block, barely perceptible in the top margin. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall
