In World War II he was taken prisoner by the Germans at the Battle of the Bulge. His first novel, Player Piano, came out in 1952 but he struggled as a writer until he achieved great success in 1969 with Slaughterhouse-Five, which is considered one of the world's great antiwar books, per the dust jacket.
