"Shosha" is a hauntingly lyrical love story set in Jewish Warsaw on the eve of its annihilation. Aaron Greidinger, an aspiring Yiddish writer and the son of a distinguished Hasidic rabbi, struggles to be true to his art when faced with the chance at riches and a passport to America. But as he and the rest of the Writers' Club wait in horror for Nazi Germany to invade Poland, Aaron rediscovers Shosha, his childhood love-still living on Krochmalna Street, still mysteriously childlike herself-who has been waiting for him all these years. The original Yiddish version appeared in 1974 in the Jewish Daily Forward under the title "Soul Expeditions".

Singer, Isaac Bashevis. Shosha [Signed association copy, that of Erwin Leiser]. Farrar Straus Giroux, New York, 1978.

Price: US$700.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: New York: Farrar Strauss Giroux, 1978. First Edition / First Printing. Signed, inscribed, and dated (May 29, 1981) by the author on the ffep to Erwin Leiser. Octavo, 277 pp. Fine copy in a near-fine dustjacket showing a bit of small-scale edgewear. At the time of its release Singer's first novel in six years, Shosha is a love story in typically offbeat Singer style. Originally written in Yiddish as were almost all most of his novels, Shosha's English title is the name of a childhood love of the protagonist. An aspiring writer in 1930's Poland, his career is being given a boost by a visiting American couple, and he's essaying the romancing not only of the American wife but of several other women as well when he again encounters Shosha. Been there, done that, though not in Poland. Erwin Leiser (1923-1996) was a highly-regarded German-born journalist and director of trenchant documentaries both historical and political in character, having especially to do with the Nazis and the holocaust, the latter being a documentary topic for which he may have been the first director. A handsome example. L53n
