Charles Brock and his brother Henry prided themselves on the historical accuracy of their illustrations; they collected antique furniture and clothing, and used friends and relations to model them in their Cambridge studio. Charles Brock was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in the same year as publication of these illustrations. The illustration depicts Marianne's distress when, she expecting the arrival of Mr Willoughby, Colonel Brandon appears instead. Original pen-and-ink water colour illustration.
