Well-preserved copy with text block edges a bit tanned, slight bump to top front corner, otherwise presents essentially as issued. Both flyleaves a bit tanned toward edges and along hinges. Firm binding, clean and unmarked interior. Color illus. dust jacket rubbed along a portion of rear joint and lower spine panel, with corners and spine extremities a bit chipped, small corner of surface paper loss at top binding corner of front panel, rear panel and flaps a bit tanned, now in mylar. Stated 9th ptg. 243 pp. Signed by author on front flyleaf, full signature, no inscription or date. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Description: Beautiful really sharp Fine First Edition in equally Fine original dust jacket of this beloved Japanese-American love story.  Basis, of course, for the immensely popular 1957 Joshua Logan-directed film adaptation by Paul Osborn which starred Marlon Brando, Myoshi Umeki, Red Buttons, Ricardo Montalban, Martha Scott and James Garner.  With the theme song by Irving Berlin, the film won Academy Awards for Art Decoration, for Buttons, and for Umeki.   This highly worthwhile literary collectible is made even more so as it is boldly signed on the half-title by James A. Michener.

Book with light toning to margins of endpapers, light toning along margins of half-title page, and faint toning to interior page margins, else book in fine condition; dust jacket with two short closed tears to upper front cover, light wear/rubbing to extremities, light toning to spine/flap margins/back cover, a faint sticker ghost near edge of front flap, and a vertical crease to back flap, else fine. Association: Miss Lucie Riddell Price was the Dean of libraries in Bucks County where Michener grew up as a child. Price's library career began in Doylestown when she opened the town's first free library, the Melinda Cox Library: One of the first to sign up for a library card was 10-year-old James A. Michener. Michener's novel, Return to Paradise, was later dedicated to Miss Lucie Price, who was credited as the person who taught Michener to love books. Basis for the 1957 film with Marlon Brando, Myoshi Umeki, Ricardo Montalban, Martha Scott and James Garner.
