CHURCHILL, Winston S.. Savrola. A Tale of the Revolution in Laurania.. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900, 1900.

Price: US$6423.85 + shipping

Description: Octavo (183 x 122 mm). Bound by Morrell for Henry Sotheran in mid-20th-century red half morocco, spine lettered in gilt, red cloth sides, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Some light scuffing around extremities, else a near-fine copy. First edition, signed by the author. Churchill has signed on the first binder's blank, apparently after binding, and presumably at the behest of Henry Sotheran, the London booksellers who commissioned the binding from Morrell. Savrola was Churchill's only novel, his third published book, but the first he undertook to write, and the second he completed. Churchill's melodramatic tale of liberal revolution in an autocratic Mediterranean state was originally serialized in Macmillan's Magazine between May and December 1899. "Whether they deem it a key indication of Churchill's innermost philosophy and political morality or just a yarn, Savrola continues to exert a grip on devotees of the canon" (Langworth). This copy is part of the British issue, and is first state with the publisher's imprint on the title page; the publication of the American issue slightly preceded the UK. Signed copies of Churchill's early titles are far scarcer than his later books. Cohen A3.1.a; Langworth pp. 38-41; Woods A3(a).
