Original blue cloth over boards with beveled edges, gilt lettering at front cover and spine, floral end papers, signed and inscribed by translator at dedication page. Very good, spine ends slightly bumped, corners slightly rubbed, spine slightly darkened, small spot at center of rear panel, front hinge cracked, sticker remain at top of front pastedown near edges, pages slightly agetoned.

The first English translation of Flaubert's famous novel set during the Mercenary War (241-237 BC).

Description: 4to. 1st edition of this translation. LIMITED SIGNED ISSUE, one of 100 SIGNED by the translator, the publisher, and the author of the introduction, but not signed by the dedicatee. Rebacked. Full leather; t.e.g. Translator's and Mrs. M. French Sheldon's photos pasted in at recto of f.f.e.p. and second blank. A few scrapes to boards, rubbing to edges and some wear to fore-corners. Chipping to edges of free endpapers. A little toning to leaves, offsetting to pps. 94-95, obviously from a plant laid-in at a previous time. Offsetting to first blank. Newspaper clippings pasted to verso of second blank and recto of third, also causing offsetting. Negligible stains to edges of text block. VG.
