THIS IS SIGNED BY CARL SANDBURG ON THE FFE WITH THE TRANSFER OF INK ON THE FRONT FLAP OF DJ. 1067 pages are clean, tight and unmarked with light tanning at edges. Front paste down endpaper has a nice bookplate signed by owner and the second endpaper has "Birthday Greetings, Oct. 21.1948 at top. The DJ's corners are clipped, with ink transfer from Sandburg's signature on front flap. Bottom edges have small chips and sides of spine have creases. SEE PHOTOS.

Carl August Sandburg (1878 - 1967) was a Swedish-American poet, writer, and editor. He won three Pulitzer Prizes: two for his poetry and one for his biography of Abraham Lincoln. During his lifetime, Sandburg was widely regarded as "a major figure in contemporary literature", especially for volumes of his collected verse, including Chicago Poems (1916), Cornhuskers (1918), and Smoke and Steel (1920). Remembrance Rock is Carl Sandburg's only novel. Sandburg described it as an epic, weaving the mystery of the American Dream with the costly toil and bloody struggles that gone to keep alive and carry further that Dream. The author, his wife, and two daughters had their ashes buried beneath the five-foot boulder he had named "Remembrance Rock," which lay in the backyard of their home. Remembrance Rock was first published in a limited deluxe edition of 1000 copies (signed, numbered, two volumes), then published in a one volume trade edition, as here. Sandburg enjoyed great appeal as a poet, balladeer, and author in his day. After his death in 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson observed that "Carl Sandburg was more than the voice of America, more than the poet of its strength and genius. He was America." SUPERIOR CONDITION for this hefty INSCRIBED volume with attractive dust wrapper. It has slight age-toning as is to be expected in this post-war paper. This is a thin darkening edge to the dust jacket which has small chips lost from the head & tail of the spine, minor rubbing A quick search for the dedicatee "Hariot Smith Erle," turns up one Hariot Smith, who was born in St Peters, Manitoba, Canada on 12 Jan 1877 and died in Selkirk, Manitoba, in 1968. But this Hariot married William Parissien. Just possibly their child married someone named "Earle." It would seem, therefore, that the dedicatee was an admirer rather than a well known personality.

Octavo, bound in three quarter morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the third free endpaper, "Bill Safire with respect and good wishes Carl Sandburg." The recipient, William Safire, was an important American author, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, journalist, and presidential speechwriter. He joined Nixonâs campaign in the 1960 Presidential race, and again in 1968. Following Nixonâs 1968 victory, Safire served as a presidential speechwriter for both Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew. He was a frequent guest on Meet The Press, describing himself as the voice of âlibertarian conservativesâ and authored several political columns, most notably his weekly column âOn Languageâ which appeared in The New York Times Magazine from 1979 until the month of his death in 2009. He authored two books on grammar and linguistics: The New Language of Politics (1968) and what Zimmer called Safireâs âmagnum opus,â Safireâs Political Dictionary. Safire later served as a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board from 1995 to 2004 and in 2006 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush. In very good condition. With Safire's bookplate to the pastedown. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer had announced, in 1941, a film American Cavalcade that was to star Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, playing husband-and-wife teams from different periods of American history. The original treatment was rejected, and in 1943, the studio arranged with Sandburg to use the idea and then pre-purchased the film rights. Charles Poore noted in his review of the work, "It is no great shakes as a novel and quite a great shakes as a book on the American destiny. Its faults and its excellences are all on what you might call a quietly stupendous scale. In the end, of course, he succeeds only in saying in half a million words or so what Lincoln suggested in the last sentence of the Gettysburg Address. But that's enough, isn't it?" Perry Miller remarked, "[It] is not really a novel; it is the chant of an antique Bard who fills out the beat with stereotypes and repetitions."
