Description: Second printing. Inscribed by Henry Miller to Dr. Robert C. Macy on the front flyleaf, with a little note ("for Bob Macy") in Miller's hand laid in. Macy was a Southern California osteopath who owned a second home in Big Sur, where he befriended Henry Miller, Alan Watts, and other writers and artists. A ruminative essay concerning the ritual suicide of Japanese novelist Yukio Mishima (1925-70). Small octavo: 47 p. with a frontispiece portrait by Elyse Lewin and cover block print by Noel Young. Original printed paper wrappers. Small bookseller's label to the front flyleaf. A bit of mild browning along the extremities, with a few minor smudges to the rear panel; else very good.

Henry Valentine Miller (December 26, 1891 ?June 7, 1980) was an American writer and painter. He was known for breaking with existing literary forms and developing a new sort of "novel" that is a mixture of novel, autobiography, social criticism, philosophical reflection, surrealist free association, and mysticism, one that is distinctly always about and expressive of the real-life Henry Miller and yet is also fictional.
