Description: [Modern Literature] INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION, SUPERB PRESENTATION COPY. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.320. Publisher's black cloth, silver titles to spine, pictorial dust-jacket designed by Biro, with printed price 10s 6d. With author's inscription to flyleaf: 'To Sir William and Lady Tennant /with best wishes from / C.S.Forester.' Later bookplate to pastedown, jacket lightly handled and marked. Near fine. A particularly fine association; the recipient Admiral Sir William Tennant (1890-1963) was a veteran of the Great War and a true war hero. He survived two significant naval losses, firstly the sinking of the cruiser Nottingham in the action of 19 August 1916, and secondly as Captain of HMS Repulse, torpedoed in the South China Sea two days after the Pearl Harbour attacks. He engaged in and oversaw the successful evacuation of Allied troops from Dunkirk; as senior naval officer ashore he corralled troops and patrolled the beaches with a megaphone calling for allied stragglers, staying to the last. For his actions he was knighted on 2nd June 1940. In the 2017 Christopher Nolan film Dunkirk, the character of Commander Bolton, played by Kenneth Branagh, draws on the accomplishments of [the then] Captain Tennant. Author C.S. Forester wrote extensively about the Royal Navy, including fiction and naval history, and several volumes of short stories set during the Second World War.
