Description: 75, [3] pp., 4to, illustrated, brown Irish linen over boards with printed hand motif; title on spine; clear acetate dustjacket. Title page printed in red, blue and black. Hand motif, which also appears at the start of each chapter, designed by Mallette Dean. Romanée type handset and printed on handmade paper from the Wookey Hole Mill in England and printed damp on a Columbian handpress. Illustrations by Victor A. Seward. One of the most desirable books issued by The Allen Press. Laid in is an autograph note from the Allens to Saul and Lillian Marks, modestly opining that this work "isn't nearly as good as it should be," and signed "L+D" [Lewis and Dorothy]. With the elegant booklabel of Lillian Marks. Saul and Lillian Marks for many decades operated the distinguished Plantin Press in Los Angeles. This copy is also signed by the Allens on the Acknowledgments page. A fabulous presentation copy that connects printers who operated two of the great American fine presses of the twentieth century.
