Allen Ginsberg. Planet News [Lynd Ward, + Moloch broadside]. City Lights Books, San Francisco, 1968.

Price: US$2900.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: A significant association copy, inscribed on the title page: "For Lynd + May Ward, Cresskill, N.J., from Allen Ginsberg, March 12 '78, old poems + best wishes." Ginsberg's "Moloch" section in Howl was influenced by the Moloch section in master engraver Lynd Ward's wordless novel Wild Pilgrimage (1932). In Ginsberg's intro to Illuminated Poems (published in 1996 a year before Ginsberg passed), he wrote, "Lynd Ward's images of the solitary artist dwarfed by the canyons of a Wall Street Megalopolis lay shadowed behind my own vision of Moloch." Fittingly, in 1978 engraver and printer Michael McCurdy commissioned Ward to illustrate a broadside of Howl's Moloch section for McCurdy's Penmaen Press. Three hundred broadsides with Ward's engraving were printed, one hundred and fifty numbered and signed by both Ward and Ginsberg. It was one of Ward's last publications. This copy of Planet News, a second printing, was inscribed to Ward at the signing of that broadside at Ward's studio in Cresskill. A copy of this large broadside, signed by both Ward and Ginsberg, is included here, number 10 of 300. The book is very good with light soiling to wraps, a touch of sunning to the spine, mild wear to top and bottom of spine, and a shallow chip to back wrap near spine that is about a half-inch long and an eighth-inch deep. The broadside is fine. A fantastic set for a Beat collector.
