SITWELL, Edith.. Alexander Pope.. London: Faber and Faber 1930, 1930.

Description: First limited edition. Signed by the author. No. 112 of 220 copies printed on English hand-made paper. 8vo. (225x145mm). pp. x, 316. Portrait frontispiece with tissue guard and seven illustrations with tissue guards. Sitwell's study of Alexander Pope. Original yellow buckram, gilt lettered on spine, top edge gilt, others uncut, contained in a rubbed and generally worn bright green slip case. One leaf marked; a very good copy. Edith Sitwell's eighteenth century has been described as "emphatically not an age of rationalism, but of eccentricity". Sitwell imagines Pope "as a misfit in a world that insisted on sameness, an artist of gleeful perversity who delighted in cataloguing the absurdities of dunces. Sitwell was writing a passionate defence of an ill, odd, disfigured, ostracized poet whose work was a way of getting through the 'long disease' of life". (Alexandra Harris, Romantic Moderns, p65)

Price: US$839.91 + shipping

Description: First edition, limited issue, number 696 of 750 copies signed by the author and printed on handmade paper. Sassoon's semi-autobiographical novel depicts trench warfare from the spring of 1916 to the summer of 1917; it was recognized almost immediately as a classic of First World War fiction. "Like Tolstoy's War and Peace, which he was also reading while he wrote his own book, it is the combination of factual detail and direct personal experience vividly rendered that makes Infantry Officer a convincing and compelling picture of war. As he told Ottoline [Morrell], he wanted to give 'a really truthful inner-narrative'. He believed that this had not yet been achieved by an English writer, apart from Blunden" (Wilson, p. 238). Keynes A33b. Jean Moorcroft Wilson, Siegfried Sassoon: The Journey from the Trenches, 2003. Octavo. Original blue buckram, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, gatherings largely unopened. Spine sunned and gently leaning, trivial rubbing to lower edges, contents clean. An excellent copy.

COLEMAN, Emily Holmes.. The Shutter of Snow.. New York: The Viking Press, 1930, 1930.

Price: US$2261.30 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing, of the author's only novel, inscribed by her on the front free endpaper, "To Jimmy and Tanya, with much love from Emily, Concho, Arizona, April 6 1944". The recipients were author James Stern and his wife Tanya. Coleman's novel, an experimental portrait of motherhood and mental illness, is scarce in commerce, inscribed copies especially so. The story is heavily autobiographical, recounting in fragmented prose a period in the 1920s when Coleman was hospitalized for psychosis following the birth of her son. Similar to Virginia Woolf's The Waves (1931), it reads like a prose poem and resists tidy summary, offering instead a striking study of a woman in the depths of mania. A new edition of this title, promoted as the "lost 1930 foremother of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar", was published in February 2023 with an introduction by Claire-Louise Bennett to much critical acclaim (Faber online). In addition to being a writer, James Stern was well-known known as a dedicated correspondent and friend of the famous, including Auden, Djuna Barnes, Samuel Beckett, Arthur Miller, and Christopher Isherwood. His extensive archive is housed by the British Library. He and his wife were amusingly described by essayist Clement Greenberg in a 1941 letter to Harold Lazarus: "He's half Irish, half Jew, Eton, Oxford, international Bohemian, ex-queer, louche, wistful, charming, malicious, jealous of me for Jeanie (whom he yearns for darkly), a snob in his way & not very intelligent, but nice, nice enough. His wife is a German Pole, same age (37 circa), good-looking, short, muscular, an ex-lesbian, a physical training instructor (a special method akin to Yoga), supports the menage by her work, and is nicer". This copy's inscription is dated at a significant turning-point in Coleman's life. In 1944, she converted to Catholicism, a decision which ended her marriage of four years to Arizona rancher Jake Scarborough. From her conversion until her death in 1974, Coleman devoted herself and her writing entirely to her faith. Clement Greenberg, The Harold Letters, 1928-1965, 2013. Octavo. Original black cloth-backed blueish grey boards, title label on spine, front cover lettered in red, top edge red, fore and lower edges untrimmed. Spine ends bumped, label sunned, a little wear to extremities, a few spots to dust toned top edge, front inner hinge starting but firm; a very good copy in like lightly toned jacket, slight chips to head of spine, edges rubbed, a few nicks and short closed tears, worming to foot of flaps and rear panel, still a bright example.

JOYCE, James (1882-1941). Haveth Childers Everywhere. Fragment from Work in Progress. Henry Babou and Jack Kahane: The Fountain Press. Printed by Ducros et Colas, Paris, 1930.

Price: US$10000.00 + shipping

Description: (11 1/8 x 7 1/2 inches). First edition. 1-72 [2], pp. 72. Title and text printed in black and green. Running heads printed in green. Signed by Joyce in pencil on the limitation leaf. Numbered 70 out of 100 copies. Original glassine and white printed wrappers. Small area of loss at lower spine, minor tear and losses to glassine along spine. Within a modern full green morocco box with gilt decoration and lettering on spine, cloth chemise. First edition, deluxe issue: number 70 of 100 signed copies of what would ultimately become Joyce's final novel, Finnegans Wake. In 1930, Joyce sent to Faber and Faber's T. S. Eliot the following "nursery rhyme" to promote Haveth Childers Everywhere: Humptydump Dublin squeaks through his norse, Humptydump Dublin hath a horrible vorse And with all his kinks english Plus his irismanx brogues Humptydump Dublin's grandada of all rogues. Though Faber made little use of it, Joyce's jingle is a key to Haveth Childers Everywhere and Joyce's inherent contradictions: the giant of English literature, who was Irish; the pre-eminent Irish cultural figure, who couldn't speak the language - and wrote in English; the Anglo who had to go to the continent to find an audience; the difficult, cryptic modernist who still has millions of mainstream readers. In 1931, a New York Times reviewer wrote that Haveth Childers Everywhere is "an attempt to enrich and refashion the English language, and as such is highly stimulating and carries the reader through a form of mental gymnastics." Unfortunately, for the same reviewer, it "still remained absolutely incomprehensible." It took Joyce sixteen years to write Finnegans Wake, a book once aptly titled, as here, "Work in Progress." The finished novel was still nine years from publication when this fragment was released. Joyce began writing what would become Finnegans Wake shortly after Ulysses was published in 1922. Fragments of the novel were issued in a variety of formats by different publishers, including Haveth Childers Everywhere, produced in Paris by Obelisk Press founder Jack Kahane and the editor Henry Babou in April of 1930, and distributed in America by The Fountain Press. The publication nearly bankrupted Kahane and Babou. Haveth Childers Everywhere consists of the final part of what is now Chapter 3 of Book III of Finnegans Wake. This copy is one of one hundred numbered copies on "Imperial hand-made iridescent Japan" signed by the author, from a total edition of 685 copies. Slocum & Cahoon A41.
